about the garden

Days are going by fast here, with lots to do in the garden and in the yard.  I love this time of year!  We're (read that me) eating salads every evening meal.  This year the lettuces and other greens are really spectacular and I've been experimenting with making my own salad dressing.  So far I have a honey mustard poppyseed one that I just can't get enough of.  I like adding fruit to my salad, strawberries, oranges, apples, and nuts and the sweetness/tartness of the this dressing seems to go well with whatever I decide to throw in. Yum!

Do you have a dressing recipe that you like?  I'd love to hear about it.

  2. I would love your recipe. I tend to still with a basic vineagrette. I am so eager for the farmers' market to start this week. Since we just moved to the DC area, I am hoping for some great produce.

  5. I just found your blog and love the name. I consider myself a sea and prairie girl too, though more sea than prairie most days. I was raised in the California bay area, but my family roots are from the prairies of Nebraska. As a little girl I dreamed of being Laura of Little House On The Prairie and wanted to have my own tiny farmhouse someday. After meeting my husband and beginning our family and raising them on the coast of northern california and wanted both. When we made the big decision to leave ca. to find our prairie, I ended up so homesick that my body broke down and the Dr. in the ER told my hubby to move me back home as soon as possible. Within two months he did and I slowly got well. I will never leave my beloved sea again. There is a gentle calm to your blog so I am adding you to my blog list. Your garden is beautiful.

  6. I love all your photos of your garden, and your boys with the chicken, too too cute!

My favorite are Newman's dressings, or Annie's, do you like Green Goddess?

  7. I make a buttermilk ranch dressing with lots of fresh herbs from my garden I can't get enough of. Equal parts buttermilk and mayo, then I dump herbs - dill, basil, sage, rosemary, parsley, thyme, oregano - salt, pepper & garlic. I have a honey poppyseed one that is divine with fruit. I wonder how similar our recipes are.

I used to read your old blog and have missed you for months. I somehow stumbled upon this and am glad to find you again. I admire you for putting things out there. I have mental illness in my family and there is such a taboo about talking about it. It's hard to understand it if you've never had to deal with it. And even then, it can be hard to deal with.
